How one round works
Before each round, the schedule shows who plays with whom and on which court. Serves rotate like normal padel, usually every 4 points in point-based mode, or by agreement. There is no advantage scoring and no sets: the running score of both teams adds up to the match point total. For a 24-point match, possible results include 15:9, 13:11 or 24:0.
Common point systems
| Points per match | Duration per match | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 16 | 7 to 10 min | many rounds, large groups |
| 21 | 9 to 13 min | classic middle ground |
| 24 | 10 to 15 min | the most common standard |
| 32 | 14 to 20 min | fewer rounds, longer matches |
Alternatively, use timed mode: every round lasts a fixed time, for example 12 minutes, and the score at the final signal counts. This keeps the schedule exact, especially when courts are booked by the hour.
Rotation and fairness
The heart of a good Americano is the rotation. The ideal: everyone plays with everyone exactly once, nobody keeps facing the same opponents, and breaks are distributed evenly. Perfect mathematical rotations only exist for certain player counts, but a good planner gets very close.
The PadelCompass planner automatically optimizes partner variety, opponent variety and breaks. With 8 to 16 players, partnerships usually do not repeat at all.
Odd player counts and breaks
With 9, 11, 13 or 15 players, as many players rest each round as needed to fit the courts. Fair distribution means nobody rests a second time before everyone has rested once. Players receive no points during a break, so the number of matches played is useful context alongside total points.
Variants: team, mixed and timed Americano
In Team Americano, fixed pairs stay together and only opponents rotate, which is essentially a Round Robin. In Mixed Americano, each team consists of one man and one woman. In Timed Americano, a fixed round time replaces a fixed point total. All three variants can be handled in the planner.
Frequently asked questions
Who serves in Americano?expand_more
Serving rotates like normal padel, usually every 4 points between teams and alternating inside the team. In a 24-point match, each team serves six times in a row across the match.
What happens if players are tied in the final standings?expand_more
The common order is: total points, then wins, then point difference. The PadelCompass planner uses exactly that order.
Can a match end in a draw?expand_more
With an even point total, yes, for example 12:12 in a 24-point match. Both teams receive 12 points. If you want to avoid draws, use an odd total such as 21.
