How the pairings are created
Round 1 is drawn at random. After that, the standings take over: before each new round, players are sorted by points and split into groups of four. Places 1 to 4 play on Court 1, places 5 to 8 on Court 2, and so on. Inside each group, the default pairing is: first and fourth against second and third.
The result: players who perform well face stronger opponents. Players with a slow start get more balanced matches and can climb back up. Blowouts are rare in Mexicano.
Mexicano variants: 1+4 or 1+3?
There are two common pairing variants. In the standard version, rank 1 plays with rank 4 against rank 2 and rank 3. This balances the teams as much as possible. In the second variant, rank 1 plays with rank 3 against rank 2 and rank 4. That rewards the leaders a little more.
In the PadelCompass planner, you choose the variant during setup. Points per match, timed mode and court count are also fully adjustable.
Who is Mexicano best for?
Mexicano is the best choice for mixed-level groups, which means most recreational padel nights. Beginners quickly play other beginners, while stronger players challenge each other. If your priority is maximum mixing and playing with everyone as a partner, choose Americano.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Mexicano and Americano?expand_more
In Americano, the rotation is mixed fairly in advance, independent of results. In Mexicano, pairings from Round 2 onward follow the standings. Mexicano creates closer matches; Americano creates more mixing.
How many rounds does a Mexicano need?expand_more
Rule of thumb: 6 to 10 rounds. Because pairings are recalculated after every round, the standings need 2 to 3 rounds to settle. From Round 4 onward, matches usually become noticeably more balanced.
Does Mexicano work with an odd number of players?expand_more
Yes. Breaks are distributed fairly across the evening. After a break, the player re-enters at their current ranking position.
Do players need an app?expand_more
