Americano, Mexicano or Round Robin: which format fits your group?

In Americano, every player plays with rotating partners against rotating opponents. Each match uses a fixed number of points, usually 16, 21, 24 or 32, and every point scored counts toward the individual standings. Ideal for 8 to 16 players on 2 to 4 courts: maximum mixing, everyone plays with everyone.

In Mexicano, pairings from Round 2 onward are based on the standings. The top four play together on Court 1, usually 1+4 against 2+3, with 1+3 against 2+4 also available. This creates close, balanced matches automatically, perfect for mixed-level groups.

In Round Robin, fixed doubles teams play every other team once. Standings are based on points, wins and point difference. With an odd number of teams, the planner assigns one bye per round. Best for established pairs, club sessions and box tournaments.

The knockout format is the pro-tour style: lose and you are out, while the winners move toward the final. The planner builds the bracket automatically, assigns byes to seeded teams or draws them randomly, and can add a third-place match. Ideal for club tournaments and events with a clear winner moment.

Frequently asked questions

Tournament planner FAQ

What is an Americano tournament in padel?expand_more

In Americano, every player plays with rotating partners against rotating opponents. Each match is played to a fixed number of points, for example 24, and every point counts toward the individual standings. The player with the most points after all rounds wins.

What is the difference between Americano and Mexicano?expand_more

In Americano, the rotation is mixed fairly in advance, independent of results. In Mexicano, pairings from Round 2 onward are based on the standings: the best four play together on Court 1, for example 1+4 against 2+3. Mexicano creates more balanced matches; Americano creates maximum mixing.

How does an Americano with 12 players and 3 courts work?expand_more

With 12 players and 3 courts, everyone plays at the same time: 3 matches with 4 players each per round, with nobody sitting out. A typical setup is 7 to 10 rounds to 16 to 24 points, which takes about 90 to 120 minutes. The planner generates the fair rotation automatically.

Can Americano work with an odd number of players?expand_more

Yes. With an odd number of players, or more players than court spots, the planner automatically rests as many players per round as needed and distributes those breaks fairly.

How many rounds do you need for a tournament night?expand_more

Rule of thumb: 6 to 10 rounds. With 8 players on 2 courts, one round to 24 points takes about 10 to 15 minutes, so a 7-round evening takes around 90 minutes. The planner suggests a suitable number of rounds, and you can add more at any time.

Is the tournament planner really completely free?expand_more

Yes. No premium locks, no app, no account, no hidden limits. PadelCompass is an independent padel hub, and the tournament planner is our contribution to the padel community.

Do my players need an app or an account?expand_more

No. Players scan the QR code or open the link in their browser on any phone. They see the schedule and standings live and, if you allow it, can enter scores right at the court.

What happens to tournament data?expand_more

Only the data you enter is stored: first names or nicknames, schedule and scores. No tracking profile, no sharing with third parties. Tournaments without activity are automatically deleted after 30 days, and organizers can delete their tournament at any time.
